Urbana Archives Making Biblical Decisions

Barney Ford

This morning Barney Ford led us in making decisions for God.

He spoke of five chapters in the story of God's love for us. In the first, God loves us enough to give us the gift of himself. In the second, his love gives us the freedom to respond to him and to tell the truth about ourselves. In the third, "God pursues us all the way to adoption" as his children. Next, he calls us to come and partner with him in his mission to the world. Lastly, Jesus is coming back for us, and if we believe in him we know where we will spend eternity: in heaven with our loved one.

How do we know where and how God wants us to join him in his mission? Seeking God's guidance can be a difficult and confusing experience. This is because "we want guidance to be categorical and God always wants it to be relational." God loves us. He is more interested in loving us than in giving us a detailed blueprint of how we ought to spend our lives. We need to be willing to love him back and to allow him to reveal his will to us step by step and in his own timing.

If we love God, we are compelled to respond to his love for us, and that involves making biblical decisions that are relational, directional and intentional. We must choose to reciprocate God's love by being intentional in our obedience to his will. In making a decision we should ask, "Does this lead me toward kingdom values?" We must be directional in the sense that our decisions must direct us toward the heart of Jesus, not away from it.

In order to facilitate decision-making, Barney led us in filling out decision cards and committing ourselves to fulfill God's call in our lives.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship."

Romans 12:1 (NIV)
