Urbana Archives From Cuba to the World

Raul Martinez Vallejo

Cuban pastor Raul Martinez Vallejo came this morning with an interpreter to share what God has done with his church to mobilize missions. His soft but earnest voice could not conceal true passion and excitement, and the crowd responded enthusiastically to his testimony.

Two years ago, a missionary visited Pastor Raul Martinez Vallejo's church in Cuba to speak about missions. Vallejo told God that he wasn't interested. But when the missionary shared that 7,000 places in the world had never heard the gospel, Vallejo said, "God trapped my heart that day." God also trapped the heart of the Cuban people.

His small church of about 500 members decided they wanted, like the first Christians, to extend their ministry from "Jerusalem" to the rest of the world. Now, every time their church is open, people in the congregation arrive to intercede for the mission field. They have also come to believe that God is the owner of all their finances. Since September, they have been sending offerings into the mission field.

Currently, the congregation is coordinating Cuba's first national missions conference, which will take place this coming year. They also have a dream to found a missions school in Cuba, and they are trusting in God to make it a reality. This Urbana missions conference has been a lesson for Vallejo in trust: he's learned he only needs to look "three steps ahead" and God will take care of the future.
