After you have successfully registered for Urbana 03, you can receive credit for your Urbana experience from the following seminaries:

Please note:

  1. If you enroll in a seminary credit course, Urbana 03 will not automatically reserve space for you in the convention. You must be registered for Urbana 03 before registering for these courses.
  2. Tuition costs for seminary credit courses are in addition to the regular Urbana registration fees.
  3. Course expectations are considered additional work to the normal delegate participation at Urbana.

Seminary Credit Courses

Asbury Theological Seminary
Course number: MW740 Tutorial
Title:
Christian Witness and Other Faiths

  • Course Description: In a world becoming more and more religiously plural, all Christians are faced with the challenge of telling the gospel story to people who already have a well articulated religious tradition of their own, whether Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, New Age, Atheism/Agnosticism, or an indigenous religion of some sort. Students will learn in this course effective ways to talk about their faith to members of specific religious traditions. Students will also learn how to study a new religious tradition with the goal of learning how to witness effectively.

  • Course Expectations:
    In addition to regular participation at Urbana 03:
    (1) Attend our two hour meeting at Urbana.
    (2) Read 1,000 pages of material appropriate to the student's mission goal, chosen jointly by professor and student.
    (3) Write a twenty-page paper (typewritten, double spaced) that outlines in some detail a mission strategy to a particular group of people.

Fuller Theological Seminary
Course Number: MI 591
Title:
Mission Issues at Urbana

  • Course Description: The purpose of MI 591 Mission Issues from Urbana is to provide students with a disciplined approach to reflection about mission issues raised at the convention as they relate to the student’s own personal ministry goals. This year the course will highlight the increasingly vital role of Christian theology as a response to contemporary trends in missions.
  • Professor: Dr. Stephanie Mar Smith, Assistant Professor and Director of Master's Programs
  • Course Expectations: An orientation lecture for the course will be given while at the Urbana convention. Attendance at this session is mandatory. The rest of the course will consist of independent research, reading and writing. There will be one more required group meeting during the quarter. Students who do not reside in the Pasadena area can “meet” with the instructor through e-mail or phone.
  • How to register for this course:
    (1) Students must first be accepted into Fuller Seminary in order to register for the course. You can easily fill out an online application at www.fuller.edu. If you would like to pursue a Masters at Fuller you may contact Admissions to guide you through the process. Call them at 1 (800) AFULLER.
    (2) Otherwise, you may apply as a Limited Enrollment Student with the capacity to take six courses at any Fuller campus. Your application includes a pastoral reference, an official bachelor’s transcript, a religious biography, application, and application fee. Application materials must be submitted by December 5. Limited Enrollment applicants may apply online or by contacting Admissions.
    (3) When you arrive at Urbana, check in with the Fuller booth and we can get you registered for the course. You must be registered at the Urbana Convention to register for our course.

Special Issues in Intercultural Missions - Urbana 03

  • Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the best of missions in today's world by exposing them to the Urbana Missions Convention. Attention is given to the dynamics of missions, agencies that are cutting edge, issues of preparation, contemporary strategies and unique challenges of today’s chaotic world - all within a holistic emphasis. The course is available for 3 semester hours of graduate or undergraduate credit through Lincoln Christian Seminary.
  • Professor: Dr. Robert C. Douglas, Professor of Intercultural Studies
  • Course Expectations:
    (1) Students will do selected reading before the convention, journal the Urbana experiences, conduct two focused interviews, write a reflection paper after the convention and engage in a debriefing session electronically.
    (2) Students are also expected to meet once with Dr. Robert Douglas during the convention.

Cross-Cultural Missions: Anthropological Insights on Contextualizing the Gospel
(Note: This course will be offered both on the graduate and undergraduate level.)

  • Course Description: The course explores ways to contextualize the Gospel message and the messenger which are culturally relevant and biblically faithful. It examines the many levels which this contextualization must take place.
  • Professor: Dr. Paul G. Hiebert, Distinguished Professor of Mission and Anthropology
  • Course Expectations: Assignments involve readings before the convention, two sessions with the professor at the beginning and the end of the convention, convention participation in plenary sessions and seminars, keeping a convention diary, and writing a paper on contextualization after the convention.
