Getting More Than I Bargained For!
Nick Johnson
For Bethsy, Urbana 2000 proved to be profitable in more ways than she bargained! Bethsy came to the US to serve with Students International, a Christian group that brings the Gospel to other countries. Bethsy came to Urbana from Guatemala, Central America. She attended the last Urbana Mission's Convention to learn more about what God is doing in different parts of the world and what part He might be calling her to play in serving Him. But she didn't expect what would happen at the Convention!
During Urbana 2000, Bethsy met Lidio, another student who also was seeking God's will for his life. Lidio came here as an international student from El Salvador. The chemistry was right (as was God's providential timing) and Bethsy and Lidio were married in April, 2003!
Bethsy recounts that she actually met Lidio in the translation area during registration, which is where the interview with them took place at Urbana 03! And, interestingly, Lidio was seeking to find out information about how to hear the sessions in his mother tongue, Spanish (the Convention offers delegates the opportunity to hear sessions in French, Spanish, and Japanese). They couldn't think of a better way to invest their 8 month anniversary than at Urbana Where God allowed them to meet three years earlier!
The couple came back to Urbana not only for the fond memories. They are serious about God's call to bring the Gospel to all the world. They love Jesus and want to make His ways known to the nations. They sense the Lord leading them, Latin Americans, to Asia, as missionaries! God is doing wonderful things today. They plan to explore the various opportunities for witness in Asia during their 5 days at Urbana. Scores of mission agencies target Asia and have established works there Bethsy and Lidio are exploring what part God has for them in bringing Christ's love and Gospel to the myriads in Asia.
And to think, it all began through an "accidental" meeting in the registration line at Urbana three years ago!
