IST Arrival
Brian Hart

Many students arrived on campus Dec. 27 anticipating that God will speak to them this week and reveal His will for their lives. This year, some students chose to be part of the first ever International Student Track (IST) at Urbana. I met several as they worked through the various stages of arrival and registration to ask them what they are expecting God to do this week.

Yi-Xing and Amy heard from friends back in Malaysia that "wonderful things" happen at this big gathering called Urbana. They came to learn more about missions, experience personal growth, and catch up with friends from across the US. Connie, who grew up in Asia, said she had grown a lot lately and felt called--even pushed--by God to come to Urbana! As a senior she is both looking for a job and an opportunity to serve people, since "many people need hope." Sylvia from China has been part of a Bible study at her school for 2 years. She is not sure about Christianity yet, so she came to Urbana to learn more about it. Anup from Ethiopia heard of Urbana from friends who said "it's definitely going to be a turning point!"

Dong from China is asking the question "what kind of mission is suitable for her?" She is willing to serve as a tentmaker anywhere in the world God wants to send her. Nadi from India is "interested in meeting more Indians" through the IST. Claudio from Mexico chose to be part of the IST because it is "interesting to hear what other students from your same country or same region are feeling right now and how they are trying to follow God in His Kingdom." Nigel from Singapore echoed that sentiment and added that the track seemed "catered" to international students.

After the IST participants arrived at their housing location, many congregated in the track lounge, where they enjoyed snacks, warm drinks, and had a chance to get to know one another. They shared stories of what God has been doing in their lives and helped others to learn more about their countries. We'll get to hear more about their testimonies as the week goes on.

"Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life."
