Acting on AIDS

Jim Thomas is a full-time professor of epidemiology at the University of North Carolina and part-time pastor for cross-cultural mission at the Chapel Hill Bible Church. As a professor he has researched and written extensively about AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. He was recently featured on an ABC TV Primetime special on AIDS.

As a pastor he has fostered a relationship with a number of churches in communities affected by AIDS. One of those relationships helped give birth to Beacon of Hope, a Kenyan-run program for women infected with or affected by HIV in one of Nairobi’s slums (see www.beaconafrica.org and www.carolinahope.org for the nonprofit organization that supports Beacon of Hope in the US). The story of that relationship will be published in the November issue of Christianity Today.

Jonathan Uy, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is an HIV specialist and clinical researcher and takes care of persons with HIV both at the University of Illinois Medical Center and at Lawndale Christian Health Center.

Dr. Uy has also served as a short-term medical missionary caring for persons with HIV in Kenya and has given lectures to medical missionaries on HIV and HIV treatment in Kenya, Thailand, and the Unites States. Dr Uy is the Principal Investigator of AIDS Research Alliance Chicago and the Chief Scientific Officer of the AMFA Foundation (Affordable Medicines for All).

He attended Urbana in 1987 and 1990 as a student and works in HIV today partly in response to a plenary talk at Urbana 87 by Tony Campolo.
