Acting on AIDS

Why focus on AIDS?
We have heard the statistics: AIDS is the plague of our generation. Some countries are so devastated that the statistics are truly numbing. What does it mean to be a Christian in the presence of such an epidemic? How can the church learn from AIDS and grow in its understanding and experience of God’s kingdom? And if the good news of God’s kingdom is hopeful, how is this hope made manifest where AIDS is a daily reality? This is what it means to see God’s mission through the lens of AIDS.

Mission through the lens of AIDSThe Mission Through the Lens of AIDS track
When looking through the lens of AIDS, much of the world looks different. Our notions of what God is doing and what God calls us to be and do may be challenged. Reflecting on what it means to be a follower of Jesus in the era of AIDS is best done in community with other believers, particularly those who have been actively responding to AIDS in the communities most affected.

AIDS awarenessThe Mission Through the Lens of AIDS track offers this opportunity. As a participant in this track you will have the opportunity to learn from people who have been actively struggling to faithfully be the hands and feet of Jesus in the presence of AIDS. You will find an environment that doesn’t respond to pressing questions with shallow answers. And you will find advice and tools that will enable you to respond to AIDS in either a US or international setting.

You should consider this track if you are:

  • Seeking to understand what God is doing through AIDS.
  • Looking for ways to promote social justice
  • Wanting to learn from people of other cultures: many of our speakers will be from countries in the Two Thirds World.
  • A student wanting to bring AIDS pandemic awareness and action to your campus.
  • Considering how your career can be a response to this epic challenge.
  • A pastor or other leader who wants to enable his or her church to be a witness of God’s kingdom in some of the most challenging situations.
  • Already working to address AIDS and
want to network with others doing the same.

Here’s how the Mission Through the Lens of AIDS Track fits into the overall Urbana 06 experience.

  • Building community. AIDS track delegates will be housed with each other in the same hotel so we can share ideas, questions, and experiences, and build relationships for future encouragement and collaboration. The AIDS track hospitality room will provide attendees with opportunities to discuss what they are learning, pray and reflect on their responses and find specific resources for application.
  • Ephesians through the lens of AIDS. All attendees of the convention will be studying the book of Ephesians. AIDS track participants will study Ephesians with application questions related to the AIDS pandemic. We will learn together how the pandemic sheds light on the message of Ephesians and how God's word sheds light on our responses to AIDS.
  • Dedicated seminars. The Mission Through the Lens of AIDS track participants will have a full range of seminar topics on mission and AIDS.

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
