God's Word

Edmund Clowney, 1917-2005

An elder in the faith has gone to be with the Lord, but we who remain are richer in God because of this man’s life. Edmund Clowney was a preacher and a teacher who never let the ivies of academy dim his passion for the lost.

He spoke at Urbana 73 and Urbana 76, challenging a generation of students to give up everything to chase after God’s way. His memorable 1973 keynote address combined the call to evangelism and righteousness with a longitudinal view of God’s magnificence in the world:

All the perversity that poisons human society springs from a deeper hate that we disguise and deny. We hate God, and we hate him because he is God: holy, just and good … All sin is at last sin against God. The most heinous sin is the root of all other sin: rebellion against God.

Dr. Clowney was an exemplary Christian, whose laughter and life-long joy witness to an understanding of salvation as far more than a mere passport into heaven, but abundant life as well.

""You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.""

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
