World AIDS Day: December 1, 2006

World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to engage your small group, church or classroom on the topic of the HIV/AIDS crisis. InterVarsity's 2100 Productions has produced a short video that is aimed at drawing attention to the AIDS crisis. This video was shot at Beacon of Hope, an AIDS Ministry in Nairobi, Kenya, and features Oscar Muriu, who is the pastor of Nairobi Chapel. You will be able to hear more from Oscar when he speaks from the platform at Urbana 06, December 27-31, 2006.

We encourage you to use this video to generate discussion about what scripture says about caring for the sick and dying, and for their orphans and widows, and about the responsibility we have to influence our leaders to govern with justice and compassion.

December 1 is World AIDS Day. Several nonprofit ministries are doing unique and special work on AIDS; here are two you might know and two you should get to know.

Urbana 06 will provide opportunities for participants to learn more about the AIDS pandemic, and how it intersects with missions throughout the world. If you know of students who are interested in missions, development, global health, or justice issues, encourage them to attend Urbana 06 and participate in the HIV/AIDS Track.

""You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.""

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
