Finding a Mentor in Missions

by Thena Ayers

Finding a Mentor in Missions Technology has often driven a wedge into the mentor/apprentice style of learning for today. We can learn faster and more cheaply perhaps by watching a video or simulator or reading a book. But the concept of mentoring has re-emerged in North America today, as we have come to realize that skill development is not all there is to learning. We are beginning to realize in the business sector and human services alike, that character, ethics, understanding and transferable applications are developed over time and often with guidance through relationships.

Of course, mentoring is not new to Christianity. The church has come to call it "discipling" in the last century. And for some, the idea of mentoring has come to mean an even broader form of discipling. Whichever term you prefer . . . a mentoring relationship will greatly aid the process of becoming a global Christian, one who is concerned about the world that God created and her or his call to minister in it.

The complexity of the world and its needs can overwhelm us. A mentor in missions can help us sort through issues, needs, opportunities to serve, areas of personal growth and commitment. Finding a mentor is not always easy, but perseverance can uncover a priceless treasure.

Begin by praying that God would provide someone to mentor you. Begin thinking about people you know and contacts you have with older and more mature Christians. There may be someone you have never considered before in this area of ministry.

Some people you may want to consider asking to mentor you in the area of missions:

  • former or retired missionary in your church (ask around)
  • a pastor or lay person with a heart for the world
  • a staff person from your Christian group
  • regional representatives or furloughed or retired missionaries in your area (call your favorite mission agency or one near you, and ask them who may be living in your area)
  • leaders in a local mission or outreach group
  • a pastor doing church planting

Once found, a mentor will challenge you in a variety of ways. Each mentor relationship will look different, but as the relationship deepens in love and mutual respect, you will find your world vision enhanced.
