Fundraising Ideas For Missions
by Linda Olson, ed.Auction Services
"Have students offer an item or a service (like bake a cake, tell a bedtime
story, cook dinner for two, mend clothes) and the other students bid on it."
Mike and Chris York, InterVarsity staff, University of Virginia
Old-Fashioned Square Dance
"We had a square dance with a baked goods auction. People brought pies, baskets
of food, etc. And bidding went as high as $45 for a pie! We also had a jail
that you could pay $5 to have someone arrested for 15 minutes. Plus we provided
a mock wedding chapel complete with plastic rings and fake marriage certificates
for $6."
Denise Klomp, InterVarsity staff, California State Fullerton and Long Beach
A Fun Run
"Plan a fun run and have students secure pledges per miles."
Marlene Hensley, InterVarsity Area Director, New York
InterVarsity Alumni
"Appeals to alumni were sent out to help fund students participating in Urbana
and summer mission projects. The alumni gave generously to help the students.
In order to receive funds from alumni, students covenanted to write personal
letters after Urbana or a mission trip thanking the alumni and informing them
of their experience."
Tom Bentum, InterVarsity staff Oberlin College, Ohio
Special Plate Dinner
"Host a special plate dinner of foods from the country to where students are
going. Charge $10 a plate and include some fun instructions under the plate
like: 'Read this Scripture at your table,' or 'Pray for the meal and the country
it represents,' or 'Send this postcard to the short-termer this summer.' Be
creative."
N_ O_, InterVarsity staff, Boston
Parable of the Talents
"Give every member in your group $2. Ask them to invest it by using their talents
over the next 3 months to multiply their money. Ideas could include:
- Buy thread and open up a mending clinic for a fee
- Buy spray starch and offer to iron friends clothes for a fee
- Change the oil on friends' cars for a fee
- Buy a cake mix and sell individual slices
- Buy a six pack of pop and sell individual cans for $75.
- Encourage students to keep reinvesting their earnings into more jobs. At the end of 3 months have a prize for whoever invested the best."
