God's Mission in the Bible
Three Bible Studies on God's Heart
Urbana 06 is InterVarsity's 21st Student Mission Convention since 1946. Student -
that's pretty clear: it's a convention for calling students to God's mission.
But what is God's Mission? A lot of students these days are uncomfortable around
words like missions or missionary. We immediately think jungles, flower-print
dresses, and worse (including many offenses connected with Western colonialism).
But mission is just an English-language word sitting on top of a profound Biblical reality. In fact, from page one to page last of the Bible, you will find a God reaching out to call a sick and broken world into his reign; and sending his people out into their world as his ambassadors. Mission lies at God's very heart. If we've done wrong in missions, the corrective is to return to the bible, not to reject God's heart.
This week it is our privilege to publish three bible studies by John Reid, who was the Bishop of South Sydney NSW in Australia in the Anglican Church for 23 years; was the International Chairman of the Evangelical Fellowship of the Anglican Communion, International Chairman of Interserve and the Chairman of the Lausanne Committee. On retirement he and his wife served as missionaries of the Church missionary Society in Nepal.
Many years ago Canon Douglas Webster, a missionary leader said that if you wanted to understand the meaning of Christian mission, you should not start by reading missionary society magazines but start reading the Bible carefully. With this in mind I turn to the Bible...
