God's Word

Guidebook for Small Group Leaders

by Bob Grahmann

This Guidebook has been prepared especially for Small Group Leaders.

It contains much of what you need to prepare for and carry out your ministry of leading a "Communal Discovery" Bible study and a prayer/sharing group. Here you will find resources, explicit instructions and suggestions for leading your prayer group, and step by step instructions for preparing and leading the Bible studies, including a special "Teaching Notes" section.

As a Small Group Leader, the Lord has called you to be a shepherd, to care for your small group.

But of course, it is the Lord who is the chief shepherd. It is He who loves and cares for His sheep, carries them in His arms, and will never let them go (Psalm 23, John 10:1-30, Isaiah 40:11). Jesus is the shepherd of your group. You don't need to be overwhelmed or overburdened with responsibility. He is in control. Let Him work through you to minister His care and His power in the lives of your group.

The most important resource you have is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, Counselor, and source of power for you. You need to be in constant contact with Him, even in the busyness and intensity of everyday life. Make sure you take time for personal moments in the Word and prayer to meet with Him and hear from Him. In this way you can process in your own heart what God is saying to you, bring your own needs and the needs of your group members before Him, and drink deeply of the presence and power of the Spirit. God bless you as you minister His grace and truth!
