Keeping Track of Your Money at Home and Abroad

Good Stewardship

There are resources out there to help you to steward your money adequately and more simply while you are overseas. To avoid major hassles, get these things done sooner rather than later:

$ Choose a financial representative here who you can trust to deposit expense checks, balance your check book, get money to you when necessary, fill out your tax forms if necessary, etc. Put this person's name on your bank account(s), give his/her name, address and phone to your agency's office as your financial contact person, and, if helpful, authorize them to have at least limited power of attorney.

$ Find out (from your team leader or the internet) about banking in your host country. You need to know not only the currency, but also how to access your money or your home account while overseas. It's good to have a main plan and a backup plan.

$ Make sure you and your financial representative know the tax laws and forms that apply to you while living overseas. It's up to you to obtain and complete any forms necessary to pay (or keep from paying) taxes while overseas.
