New Europe
At the stroke of midnight on May 1, 2004, Europe changed forever.
The accession of ten mostly formerly-communist countries to the European Union has been widely ballyhood. The truth is, this tremendous change will be simultaneously grander and more modest than widely rumored. But this much is certain: things will look very different in the future, as Europe becomes ever more integrated in culture and life, and these changes will become more meaningful than the unified currency and legal structures.
For the first two weeks of May, urbana.org is featuring a series of articles on cultural shifts in Europe.
