One Lord (Urbana 57)

Speech delivered at Urbana 57

On Saturday morning I gave a few preliminary remarks to point out the fact that I was speaking not as an evangelist primarily, but as a Bible teacher. What I am saying is addressed primarily to those who have been born again, whose hope is built in Christ. But since many have arrived who were not at that first morning's meeting, I want to take one moment again to outline what I mean by a born again believer.

Very frequently I use this as a test question. Suppose there were to be an accident, a tornado, that would bring this building down upon us, and not one of us should survive. And if at the next moment you were asked at the gate of heaven, "What right do you have to come into God's Heaven?", what would you say? This diagnostic question is capable of penetrating to the very heart of your spiritual situation.

If anybody here would say, "Well, God, I've never done anything very bad," then you can be sure of the fact that you're not going to get into heaven. If your plea is your own righteousness, suppose God Almighty took this entire audience into heaven right now without changing it. There would be somebody in this group who in heaven would say, "Oh, my toothache," or, "My rheumatism." There would be somebody in heaven who would be a gossipy cat. In an audience of this size somebody is going to suffer pain or is going to sin in thought, in word, in deed. No, no! If God took this audience to heaven without changing us, we would not be heaven any more, we would be Urbana, Illinois, and that's not heaven. (No wise crack intended.)

The point is this: our readiness for heaven has nothing whatsoever to do with what our life has been. Our readiness for heaven is Jesus Christ and we have no other readiness for heaven. When I was a young man, the man who led me to Christ put out his left hand and his right hand. He put a hymn book on his right hand and he said, "Let the right hand represent yourself and this left hand Christ." Now he said, "There is your sin and your sin is on you. Now if we die with our sin on us we must receive the inevitable consequences of judgment." And then with a sweeping motion he put the book from one hand to the other and quoted, "The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all" (Isa. 53:6).

The moment I believe in Jesus Christ, where is my sin? My sin is no longer on myself, it is on Him. We can sing that hymn, "It is Well with my Soul." "My sin, Oh, the bliss of this glorious thought, My sin, not in part, but the whole, Is nailed to His cross and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh, my Soul."

One of the most important sentences I believe you can ever get thoroughly into your conscience is the fact that there are not three places in the universe where sin may be, there are only two. There are only two places in the universe where sin may be. Sin is on the sinner or it is on the Saviour. There is no third place where sin may be. Now the good news, the good news we have, is that God now deals with us through Jesus Christ.

Every once in a while someone says to me, "Well God wouldn't be just if..." and I stop him and say, "Shut your mouth and stop blaspheming." Because for any man to say, "God would not be just if ..." is to take God from His place in heaven and bring Him down beneath the judgment of human personality and say, "God, I want you to submit to my standards of righteousness and judgment." I tell you, God Almighty will not tolerate it when someone says, "Well, God wouldn't be just if He condemns the heathen." God would be just if He sent every one of us to hell.

I think one of the most important things that ever came to my life was the day when I put down on a piece of paper, "I, Donald Barnhouse, truly deserve to be in hell," and I signed it. And you do that. If someone here says, "But I don't think I do," if you don't think you should be in hell, you have never understood either the holiness of God or the sinfulness of sin. The minute you say, "Every member of the human race should be in hell," then the wonder of the grace of God that bringeth salvation begins to burst upon us and we realize how marvelously God acted.

We are prepared, therefore, to tell you what the gospel is, for the gospel is this: you don't have to have anything to do with the justice of God. Is there any fool here who wants what's coming to him? Is there any fool here who really wants to have anything to do with the justice of God? Oh, praise God, the gospel is this: Christ met the justice of the Father, and so there's nothing left for us but the love of the Father. This is the gospel: that we never deal with the justice of God again; that we deal only with the love and the grace of God. That is the good news.

Now the thing you must constantly reiterate and speak in all Of your witness is the constant fact, we should be in hell. People round about you don't want to accept it. They've even invented the idea that there has to be an intermediate place, some Purgatorial cleansing for somebody because they're not really bad enough to go to hell and they're not really good enough to go to heaven. So there ought to be some intermediate place. But God will tolerate nothing of the kind. God says, "Righteousness is in Jesus Christ and it is no place else." "And God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son" (John 3:16). This is the gospel.

Now I turn to the lesson before us in connection with the subject, 'One Lord, the Lordship Of Christ. As I read my Bible I discover more and more that God Almighty never had a thought from eternity to eternity that did not center in Jesus Christ. For God Almighty, Jesus Christ is everything and He loves Him so much He wants to people the universe with those who are formed in His image. That's why He saves us. As it says in Romans 8:29, "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son."

This is God's desire, that you and I should be like the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the purpose of salvation. The Lord, the Lord, the Lord.

Now we go to the 17th of John, and I want to speak to you about this one Lord of ours. In the beginning of the 17th chapter Christ Jesus is praying. Here, by the way, is a great example of inspiration and revelation. Nobody had a tape recorder recording this prayer. It would not be in the Bible if the Holy Spirit had not dictated it to John in the very terms that are here. This is not anything that is retained in the Bible by memory or by tradition. It's like the account of the creation, which had to be given by God in detail because there was no one there overlooking God's shoulder. This is God Almighty speaking to God. This is one of the conversations inside the Trinity, of which there are many on record in the Bible. God talking with God.

"These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee" (John 17-l).

Several years ago when I was preparing a radio message on "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God," I telephoned down to one of our secretaries. I said, "Mary," (she's a Ph.D. in English and knows the Lord,) "without thinking I want the first thing that comes to your mind. Give me a definition of glory."

"Well," she said, "it's bright and radiant and ..."

I said, "That's all I want to hear. Now you go into the offices where the staff is working and you give each one of them a piece of paper and say, "Dr. Barnhouse wants you to write. You've got thirty seconds to do it. He doesn't want you to think it over. Write down your definition of glory."

It was the battiest series of definitions that we got. I wonder where they all got the idea that glory had something to do with neon lights lighting up. Well, maybe it was because we learned when we were babies at Christmas that "the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid."

But one person there who was of German background translated the German word and that was it. Herrlichkeit, which means, the quality of being like God. Herrlichkeit, being like the Lord. This is the German word for glory.

Now the Greek word is very, very interesting. The Greek word is doxa. Originally it meant opinion. If you go back in early Greek, classical Greek, you'll discover the word doxa was used for good opinion and bad opinion. Little by little, if you had a straight opinion, you were orthodox, and if you had another opinion you were heterodox. If two opinions went along side each other, it was a paradox. Orthodoxy, straight opinion, became in lots of people's mind, "My opinion" and heterodoxy, "somebody else's opinion."

But little by little the word changed, because words are always changing their meaning. Fifty years ago jam was made out of peaches and they put it in glass bottlenecks, but now the bottlenecks are out on the highway and the jam is made out of traffic. This is how words change their meaning. This happened to the word for opinion, "What's your opinion of God, what's your doxa about God?" And it was good and good and good, so little by little the word doxa began to mean the glory of God. We have the Doxology, which is the science of doxa, the science of praise, the science of glory, all of these things.

We come down to this whole question of the glory of Jesus Christ, for He says in John 17-5, "And now, 0 Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was." Not merely opinion, but being like God.

When we understand this true meaning, then we can understand Philippians 2:6,7. Jesus, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but emptied Himself and took upon Him the form of a servant.

We have in John 17:5 the fact that Jesus Christ is reincarnate God. I refuse to have a law view of Jesus. I will not acknowledge anyone as being a Christian if he does not believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord God Almighty Jehovah, the second Person of the Trinity. It isn't enough to say, "I believe that Jesus is the Son of God."

A certain person who was a member of the Board of Lectureship of a certain cult that goes around giving free lectures was asked after a question period in San Francisco, "Do you believe in the divinity of Christ?" He answered, "I would no more think of denying my own divinity than I would the divinity of Jesus Christ." I don't want to have anything to do with anything like that. When he was asked, "Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?" he said, "Why, we're all sons of God." That is not true. Let's face the fact that it is not true.

I remember one day in Allahabad, India, the great agricultural missionary there, Sam Higginbotham, walked with me one evening at sunset. He said, "You know, the curse of India is that one verse in Genesis has been turned upside down. Man should have dominion over the cattle. In India the cattle have had dominion over the people. This is why I hate cow worship, because it is so destructive to the soul of the people."

Later on as I thought that one false doctrine could curse a people, the one false doctrine that is on the point of cursing the United States is the doctrine of the universal Fatherhood of God and the universal brotherhood of man. God is not the Father of all men. God is the Father of those vho are born again through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. There are two families. There are two fatherhoods. In John 8:38 Jesus said, "I speak that which I have seen with my Father, and ye do that which ye have seen with your father." The Pharisees said, "Oh we have one Father, even God," (John 8:39). That's the Pharisees text, the doctrine of the Fatherhood of God.

Jesus said, "If God were your Father, ye would love me...Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it" (John 8:42, 44).

Someone says, aren't we all descended from Adam? Yes, we are. Well, wasn't Adam created by God? Yes. And I answer in a way that a missionary answered a school teacher down in Central America. The missionary had preached what I have preached, and the school teacher came and said, "But did not God create race and therefore are we not all His children?"

The missionary was in a small town and everybody knew everything about the the details of the church, and he said, "Who made these benches?" The teacher said, "Hosea, the carpenter." "Well, do you call these benches Hosea's children? He made them." "0h, no," he said. "Well, 'why don't you?"

"Well," the teacher said, "they don't have the life of Hosea in them." The missionary looked at the teacher and said, "Do you have the life of God in you?"

You see, that's the point. God tells us that when Adam sinned the human race ceased being children of God. That is why it says in John 1:12, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God."

Our teacher the other night pointed out that power came from the Greek word dunamis, which means dynamite. But there are two other words translated power in our Bibles. There is the word kratos from which we get aristocrat, autocrat, plutocrat, democrat- all the crat words that speak of authority and power. Those words are used at times in the Scripture. But there is another word, exousia, which is used in John 1:12, "As many as received him, to them He gave a permit to become the children of God." And no person is a child of God unless he has come through Jesus Christ.

Let me make it simple and plain. If I have a group of people here - a white man, a black man, a yellow man, (any shades you like) and someone from Russia, or from the United States - and none of these people believe in Jesus Christ, they are brothers to each other; they are children of wrath, children of disobedience. Then take another group - a white man, a black man, a yellow man, a red man, (all shades) and somebody from Russia, and the United States - and all of these believe in Jesus Christ. These are brothers to each other, but this group is not brothers to the first group.

I am not the brother of an atheist. I'm his neighbor. I'll give a blood transfusion to him and feed him when he's hungry, but for him to become my brother he must be born again so he can have my Father God through Jesus Christ. And as much as you ever can do it, hit the idea that God is the Father of all men and that all men are brothers. God is the Creator of all men and Galatians 3-26 says, "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."

The Lord of glory came in order to redeem us, to take men out of one group and put them into another. We confront the lost world with the gospel. We tell people there is a line drawn between the two and the difference is Jesus Christ. He said, "Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was" (John 17:5). Before the world was, there He was as God the Son.

Don't ever say the Trinity is God, Christ and the Holy Spirit. That's a theological error. The Trinity is God, God and God; or, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. This is the Godhead. The Lord Jesus Christ was there in the bosom of the Father. You will discover them in the Old Testament talking with each other. "The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool" (Ps. 110:1). There are many other passages in the Scripture where God speaks with God. Then came the day when they planned together that God should come in Jesus Christ., the Word made flesh to dwell among us, and He did. For those thirty-three years He was here, and especially the three years of His ministry, He walked about this earth. If you would have looked at Him You would never have picked Him out from anybody in the crowd. I don't know what Jesus looked like, except that He certainly didn't look like this pink-haired, pink-bearded Hollywood thing.

I wish I could communicate to you how much I hate pictures of Jesus Christ. They are so foreign and alien to Him. Why should we want to have physical things around to remind us of something that is not the Lord of glory? When God Almighty tells us, "He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, and we hid as it were our faces from him" (Isa. 53:2,3).

This is the Lord of glory. If you had walked down the street in Jerusalem and seen this tattered group of ex-fishermen, you would have looked and said, "They certainly came from the wrong side of the Sea of Galilee." You wouldn't have been interested in them at all.

The Lord Jesus Christ had to die, to be lifted up, in order to draw all men unto Him. But it's not in any physical image. After all Christ said, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).

The day came when Jesus said, "Father, glorify me. Give me all I had before." (John 17:5) For what He had done was to lay aside His coronation robes and had come down to live in an ordinary suit among men.

I remember seeing two pictures of George VI - the first in his coronation robes. He was looking every inch a king with all that ermine, scarlet, crowns, and diamonds, and a scepter. Then I saw a picture of him at the time when a blockbuster bomb had fallen upon East London. He went down with Churchill and some of the others to see this vast crater covering about four blocks.

Already little Union Jacks were up on the mound of the rubble and a photograph of the king and the group was printed in the paper. Here were a half dozen men, all of them had on derby hats and overcoats as they were walking there. The only way you would know that this was the king rather than one of the others was that the photographer had superimposed an arrow saying, "The King."

When I saw that picture of the king in a derby hat down visiting the people who had been bombed in London, one among them, weeping with them, I said this is just as much the king as when he is in his coronation robes. When I see Jesus Christ walking the roads of Galilee and steadfastly setting his face to go to Jerusalem, I say, "This is the King, the Lord of glory, who so loved me that He was willing to be the Word made flesh." Then came this day when He said, "Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was" (John 17:5).

Did God answer that prayer? Turn over to I Peter 1:21. It says, "Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory." Oh, praise God! Isn't that wonderful? In John 17 He prays, "Oh Father, give me glory." And later on the Holy Spirit says through Peter, "God raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory."

So the Lord on the day of His ascension went back into heaven and changed His clothes. He put upon Himself the robe of the glory of the only begotten of the Father and heard the Father say, "Sit Thou on my right hand until ..." That word "until" is very important. "Until I make thy enemies thy footstool." This is the Lord of glory. The day is coming when He is going to come forth. I'm going to use language that is in the Old Testament. It's so terrible that I would not dare to originate it, but the Bible says that Jesus Christ is going to come and squash our civilization like a bunch of grapes.

I have been in Mediterranean countries at the time of the vintage when they're making the wine. The men roll their trousers up to their knees and go in and tread out the grapes and make wine. The girls laugh around the edges of the wine pit and the men trample and splash till the wine is splattered upon them.

You'll find in the Bible this description of Jesus Christ. "Who is this that cometh from Edom with garments dyed from Bozrah?" (Isa. 63:1). Who is this that tramples the vintage of the wrath of God, splashed with the blood? (Isa. 63:2). Jesus Christ is not merely the meek and lowly Jesus, but He is the One who is going to put His foot upon our American way of sinning. Never have so many sinned against so much. Everything we know as university life, everything we know as Wall Street, everything we know as Broadway or Hollywood, everything we know in the arts, in literature, yes, everything we know in ecclesiasticism is going to be stepped on and squashed by Jesus Christ in His second coming. This is the teaching of the Word of God.

"Sit thou on my right hand until..." The day will come when He will rise from the throne of God; He will lay aside the robes of His mediation, and He will gird upon Him the sword of justice. He shall come to rule with a rod of iron and to dash His enemies to pieces as a potter's vessel. Everything we saw day before yesterday in our study of the world which He refused to pray for will be brought to its climax and its fruition.

We belong to the Lord Jesus Christ and the day will come when we will join in singing, "Hallelujah, the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever."

Yes, the Father raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory. If you want a picture of what Jesus Christ is today, turn over to ...the first chapter of Revelation. In the book of Revelation there is a vision in verse 12, chapter 1, which says, "I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, girded about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they were burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters" (Rev. 1:12-15).

I once saw a painting by an artist in the museum in Kassel, Germany. He had tried to put this on canvas. It looked like a horror out of Ripley's "Believe it or Not." Here was a being with hair white as wool. His eyes looked like automobile headlights coming out of a tunnel; His tongue, as that of a sharp sword, looked like serpents fangs coming out, and all the rest of this horror. This is not a picture that is to be looked at with the eyes.

This is a concordance index of the Old Testament. If you look every clause up in a good concordance, you will discover that it refers to seven different visions of God in the Old Testament. His hair was white like snow--look it up in your concordance-- white hair, and it will immediately refer you to Daniel, "And I saw the Ancient of Days sitting upon the Throne, and His head and hair was white like wool."

Who is Jesus? Jesus is the Ancient of Days of Daniel. Who is it that had a voice like the sound of many waters? Go back to Ezekiel and find out. Who is it that has feet like fine brass? Read it in Jeremiah. These are indexes to the Old Testament and what God is saying here. Jesus Christ is none other than the Lord Jehovah of Hosts, the God of glory, seated upon the Throne of Heaven, vested with all the power and the authority of the Triune Godhead.

God raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory. But I want to tell you this. We read in the Proverbs that the righteous rejoiceth in the death of the wicked. I can't tell you how happy I was when I saw the picture of Mussolini hung up by the foot, hanging head down, dead, and knew that this vicious monster was removed from the earth.

If you know Jesus Christ you will learn how to hate sin. Don't ever say God is love without balancing it with God is hate. God loves the sinner, but God hates sin. Unless you balance this you have a lame God, a false concept of that which is God. In Hebrews, chapter 1, one of the marks of the deity of Christ is this, "Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity, therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows" (Heb. 1:9). Jesus knew how to hate sin. He knew how to tell the Pharisees they would depart into the lake of fire. I love Him for this. Oh, that we might understand that we must follow our Lord Jesus Christ and understand how He is Lord.

I want to turn back for my last point once more to the 17th of John and before I read the verses that I'm going to give you, I want to read the two I have already given you, and then put the third one on top of it. The first text was John 17:5, "Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was." I Peter 1:2l, "God raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory."

Now we turn to John 17 and read verse 22, "And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them." Do you understand your place in the plan of God? Do you understand that God loves you because of Christ and God is determined that He is going to make you like Christ? He's going to whittle on you, He's going to cut away, He's going to rub you with sandpaper, extra fine, and ultimately He is going to do that for which you were predestinated.

How many people there are who glibly recite Romans 8:28 without knowing Romans 8:29. You hear them say, "Yes, we know that all things work together for good to them that love the Lord, to them who are the called according to verse 29, His purpose." But what is it? And it's this--"For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestined to be conformed to the image of his son" (Rom.8:29).

God is never going to stop working on you till you are more and more and more like Christ. "It doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him" (I John 3:2). Jesus said, "What do you think I came down here for? I came down to redeem you and bring you out." He says, "I have a dowry for you." What is the bridegroom's present to the bride? "The glory thou gavest me I have given them." This is our destiny.

Don't think God has saved you in order to lift you up to be like Adam was before the fall. We were made lower than the angels in Adam, and Christ was made lower than the angels in order to lift us how high? Don't ever sing the foolish little song, "I want to be an angel and with the angels stand, a crown upon my forehead, a harp within my hand." I don't. That's not heaven. If you ever think heaven is sitting on a cloud polishing your crown and taking harp lessons, you don't understand symbolic language. If you've read C. S. Lewis, at that point he says, "We must understand symbolic language. God told us that we must be like doves, but that does not mean that we're to lay eggs." Now this is C. S. Lewis' remark on symbolic language.

What are we to be in heaven? Heaven isn't the place of literal pearly gates, streets of gold that can be tested by chemistry. Oh, Yes, if you want that kind of a heaven, I suppose God would let you have it, but I think--I'm sure in fact--that heaven is going to be a place where our desires will be His desires. What God is telling us is that heaven is rustless and it's of great value and above all, it's going to be Himself. I do not put it beyond the plan of God that some day He should say to you, and you, and you, and you, go there in space and by the wisdom and power that you have in me, create a new world and I'll give you an Adam and Eve for it, and you shall govern it for me.

We are the bride with the Bridegroom. In Ephesians 1:23 it says we are the fullness of Him that filleth all in all. We are the fullness of Him that filleth all in all. All this dowry is for you, therefore what manner of men should you be?

May I close with a story? A few years ago I saw a news item in TIME. I never saw the conclusion and I don't know how this story turned out, but TIME told the story of a young man named Patino from Peru. Now Patinos are like the Rockefellers or the Fords--they were the people who owned the tin mines. This young fellow was the heir of a billion dollar tin fortune. He had just been appointed ambassador to France. You can get appointed ambassador to France at the age of 29 if you have that name and that kind of money. The point of the story was that he had passed through the United States. It said the rumor was that he wanted to meet and marry an American girl. Well, I never saw the conclusion. I don't know whether he did or not. But just suppose.

Let's just suppose that he met and fell in love with Miss You. All right. Now what's going to be the difference right away? The minute it is announced in the papers that she's going to marry a billionaire, and that she's going to Paris and that he has built a tremendous house, and they're going to be the center of Paris society, the rest of the girls call her up. "Hi, Midge. Come on over and play bridge." "Well, I'm sorry, you know. I have an appointment. You know I'm going to be married." "0h, yes."

Then another girl calls her up, "Hi. Come on over and talk about the other girls who aren't here." (Brother, that laughter is highly indicative that most of you do it.) Now she's going to answer, "But you know, I have to learn both French and Spanish because my husband is a Spanish boy and he's ambassador to France, you know." (They know it, but she tells them over again). And that is the way it is.

Then a boy arrives from Korea and calls her up and says, "Hi, Babe. How are ya. I've been thinking about the last date we had. How about it for tonight?" She Says, "You probably haven't heard, but I am engaged to be married." Well, he soon hears about it.

In other words, the minute that this man had set his love upon her, her entire life is changed. She no longer wants to associate with the old associations. She no longer wants to do the same things. She no longer has fellowship and companionship in the same bracket.

Let me tell you this. The Bible tells us that it's the Lord of glory who has fallen in love with us, who has loved us and set His love upon us. God raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, "and the glory which thou gavest me I have given them" (John 17:22).

Can you ever be the same again when you know Jesus Christ loves you like that? Can you ever be the same again when you know you have been joined to Him and that your dowry is nothing less than the glory of the Godhead--not to lift us up to the level of angels, principalities, powers, or the archangel, but Sons of God, to be seated upon the throne of the Lord Jesus, joined with Him in the administration of the universe. This is our One Lord, the Lord of glory.
