Responding to the Tsunami

by Barry Sherbeck

Christians urgently need to respond to the tsunami disaster that has affected millions of people around the Indian Ocean. The death toll has exceeded 150,000, and more will die from unsanitary conditions and food, water, and medical supply shortages. The UN has warned of pending epidemics from water-borne diseases in several areas in the next few days. Millions have lost their homes.

While the current need is for medicine, food, dry rations and clothing, later on there will be a need to help rebuild lives (build homes, provide counseling), livelihoods (fishing boats for fishermen), and infrastructure.

1) Make a donation right away if you possibly can to emergency relief efforts.

2) Pray diligently.

  • for efficient relief efforts and cooperation among agencies and governments
  • for volunteers and agencies to be able to reach and effectively serve those in need quickly
  • for God's love to be shared in word and in deed by Christian communities around the world even in the midst of this tragedy
  • for God's mercy, as the creation "groans" in decay (Romans 8:18-27)

3) Read international and regional news sources so that you can pray daily with informed awareness of local needs.

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
