Student Training In Mission

Make the most of your short-term or longer-term mission experience. How? By getting the best preparation training you can!

Preparation for missions takes more than just the know-how of international travel. It takes an understanding on a variety of levels. If you benefitted from the cross-cultural simulation excercise in the previous article, consider getting more cross-cultural training for yourself or your group.

InterVarsity’s STUDENT TRAINING IN MISSIONS (STIM) program provides intensive cross-cultural training to help prepare students for short-term missions experiences and for life in an increasingly multi-ethnic world. The STIM program has earned a reputation for high quality in its students ability to relate cross-culturally.

The STIM program requires 30 hours of cross-cultural training that includes these five critical components or modules:

  • BIBLICAL BASIS. Make sure you know WHY you are going on a cross-cultural mission project.
  • ACCEPTANCE AND TRUST. Learn the fundamentals for solid cross-cultural relationships.
  • FACING DIFFERENCES. Understand the importance of cultures and why they differ.
  • COPING STRATEGIES. Develop skills for a Biblical learner/servant attitude that will be effective cross-culturally.
  • DEBRIEFING AND RE-ENTRY. Understand and tell your story well to friends on campus and in your church.
