Interpretation
- Why is it so important to live differently than “the nations”?
- What role does learning the truth play in putting off the old self? What is the connection between thinking and doing?
- How does one put off the old self and put on the new?
- Why did Paul select the particular elements of this sin “triad”? Why is this sin “triad” repeated three times?
- What does Paul mean by “live as children of light”?
Application
- Which area of life is God highlighting for you from this passage? Who can you seek out for ongoing accountability and prayer, to help you “put on the new self” in that area?
- Prayerfully call to mind people with whom you have been angry in the last month. With whom do you still need to reconcile and forgive? When will you speak with them?
- What is the quality of your speech? In what ways do you need to change the way you use your words in order to more effectively build others up?
- Are you pursuing sexual purity? Where do you need God’s forgiveness, healing, and transformation? With whom will you share this and receive accountability and assurance of God’s forgiveness?
- In what ways is greed manifested in your life? What concrete steps of repentance will you take?
- To what extent do you live as a child of light? Into what particular areas of the world’s darkness is God inviting you, to expose evil, pray for justice and healing, and work towards transformation?
