Interpretation

  1. What does it mean to submit to one another? How are the specific commands related to submission?
  2. What is the connection between being filled with the Spirit and mutual submission?
  3. Why does Paul spend more time on the marriage relationship than the others?
  4. How do Paul’s descriptions of marriage and of Christ and the church deepen our understanding and practice of both?
  5. Do Paul’s instructions to slaves and masters uphold or undermine the institution of slavery?

Application

  1. How could your local Christian fellowship grow in being filled with the Spirit? What part might you play in that growth?
  2. List all the relationships you have where someone has power over you and where you have power over someone else. What will mutual submission look like in these relationships?
  3. We are all children of someone. How are you doing at obeying and honoring your father and mother? What needs to change?
  4. When you work, do you do it wholeheartedly, as if you worked for Jesus? Why or why not? How would having confidence in the Lord’s reward change your relationship to your work environment?
