God's Word Joshua 1:1-18

When God gives an assignment, he stands ready to provide the resources. You will find in your own experience that His promises are as reliable today as in the time of Moses and Joshua.

Israel now stands at the threshold of the promised land without a leader. The crucial battles loom ahead and Moses who led them for forty years is dead. Into this power vacuum God thrusts Joshua with a great commission and a promise to go with him.

Observation and Interpretation
1. Find the commands and encouragements God gives Joshua in verses 1-6.

2. What basic promise does God make that establishes the kind of relationship He had with Moses? (v. 5)

3. God's promises have conditions. In verses 7-9 find the verbs that spell out Joshua's responsibility in this relationship. (Note the place of the law of God in his life.)

4. Describe in your own words the means by which Joshua is to have strength, courage and success.

5. What is Joshua's response and what action does he take to implement his commission? (vs. 10-15)

6. What immediate fulfillment of God's promise does Joshua experience in his leadership? (Vs. 16-18)

Application
Jesus gave a similar commission to His disciples. He said to them: "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you." John 15:16

7. God has appointed you to be a witness. What resource does God promise and what responsibility do you have in claiming it?

8. In your life presently, what could help you in experiencing strength, courage and success that comes from God?
