God's Word Lent 2006, part 4
Group Assignment

Matthew 28:18-20

Devotions for fasting, March 27-30: Only healthy adults should participate in this fast. If you are taking medication or are a nursing mother, please do not participate in abstaining from food, but prayerfully find other pleasures to give up during Lent. For more on Lent itself, see week 1

Monday Meditate on Matthew 28:18 (Read and repeat it several times throughout the day)

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’”

In this passage, Jesus is telling the disciples that He has the power to equip them for what He will command them to do.

  • Why is it some times so hard for you to believe that God will/has equipped you to do what He has instructed?
  • Spend time in prayer asking God to help you in the areas where you belief is weak and to help you increase your faith.

Tuesday Meditate on Matthew 28: 19-20 (Read and repeat it several times throughout the day)

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus spoke these words before ascending into heaven. He spoke these words to His disciples. This command is to be obeyed by every follower of Christ. The foundation and basic building blocks of every assignment given by God is to tell people about salvation through Jesus and teach them to obey what Jesus has said.

  • How does the assignment that God has given you line up with this command?

Wednesday Meditate on Matthew 28:19-20 (read and repeat it several times throughout the day)

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Part of being a disciple (a follower of Christ) is to learn about Jesus and to know and do what he has taught. After you have been taught, you will be able to teach others.

  • Are you involved in a group Bible Study? How are you immersing yourself in Jesus’ teachings?
  • Are you surrounding yourself with people that point you towards God's word when you are seeking advice about choices and decisions?
  • Think about when you first became a follower of Christ ... in your opinion, how much have you grown spiritually, since you first became a believer?

Thursday Meditate on Matthew 28:19-20 (read and repeat it several times throughout the day)

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Throughout this month, we have heard God (through his Word) tell us over and over again that He would be with us. We have His assurance that He is with us and that we have been empowered by Him to complete what He has assigned to our hands. The assignments that we have been given are not for our glory or edification, but to bring others to God and to bring glory to His name.

  • Spend time praying today about what God wants you to do after Lent is over.
  • Take the time today to write down two or three things that will move you towards obedience in this area.
  • Tell someone what you have written and asked for accountability.

You have been called, consecrated and appointed. You have an assignment to complete. What will you do with what has been placed in your hands?
