Summary: It is our great privilege here in InterVarsity’s Missions Department to introduce one of our own – a book edited by Scott Bessenecker. The Quest for Hope is a collection of essays and scholarly articles on the topic of global urban slums, organized and introduced by Scott to push the reader toward faithful action.

One of the greatest dangers to the souls of intellectually-minded folk is academic paralysis: there is always more to read; meaningful action can be put off another day. The frustrating counterpoint is that more study would usually do us well. The world is littered with the wreckage of misguided and proudly anti-intellectual altruism.

The Quest for Hope is Scott Bessenecker’s project to give students (like those going on the Global Urban Trek – for whom it is required reading) a grasp on the most important aspects of urban ministry in the developing world. From the study of urban migration, to wealth creation among the poorest of the poor, to problems of generational despair, Bessenecker has assembled a terrific collection here.

But this is not ivory tower theorizing. This is about informed action. As Bessenecker puts it in one of his introductory essays:

What about North American college students for whom this anthology is designed? Can spoiled rich kids muster what it will take to enter the reality of the slum community as agents of transformation?

Bessenecker clearly believes this generation has what it will take. This book is his gift to those who want to follow God into the slums of this world.

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
