The City of the Dead: A History of Cairo’s Cemetery Communities
Authors: Jeffery Nedoroscik
Publisher:
Type of cover: Soft Cover

Summary: This is a fascinating look inside the lives of people living in a slum in Cairo, Egypt, who occupy the mausoleums of the dead. The author, Jeffery Nedoroscik, an American student, spent several years getting to know the people of this slum, eating, working alongside, even sleeping inside this cemetery community. A couple of his chapters are devoted to telling the stories of the people who live in this slum in their own words – something hard to come by and needful if others are to prepare to enter into their lives. Other chapters are devoted to descriptions of their community including the culture that has grown up around them. He addresses various housing issues, migration, employment, city infrastructure, health care and education.

""Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.""

Matthew 24:12-14 (NIV)
