Summary: Gugler begins with a comparison of regional differences in urbanization. He looks at GNP, rural-urban migration and political factors as he compares Latin America, Asia, Arab and Sub-Saharan urbanization.

A chapter on Latin America gives a good historical perspective. Tracing the history of urbanization in Latin America, de Oliveira and Roberts look at the significance of migration, the variety in urban systems, urban land use patterns, and social inequalities. In addition to being a straightforward, academic treatment of urban poverty in Latin America, the chapter leans toward a neo-Marxist interpretation of the role of class, labor markets and capital, giving yet another lens of urban poverty.

Rhodes Murphey gives an historical overview of the cities of Asia, believing that many contemporary issues in these cities have roots in their early development, with a perspective on the role of Western colonization in Asia in urban development.
