ACTS OF FAITH: A MEMOIR
This autobiography describes Abbott’s journey into the Moral ReArmament movement (MRA) which Frank Buchman began in 1929 and was most broadly known for its youth singers “Up With People” which still functions today. As a teenager Abbott was caught up with MRA’s vision of saving America and the world. She reflects on why she was attracted and critically reviews her naivete, preoccupation with herself and her emergence out of this “club” and into adult faith in the Roman Catholic church........ Reflecting on her California MRA experience as a post-high school member of “The Team” she realized, “Explanations and answers and solutions are like balls that roll into the right holes of curiosity. If there are no right holes, the balls will roll right by.... Those of us who were born into the MRA grew up with all the answers before we understood the questions” (page 28). Abbott describes a process that borders on mindless loyalty or an almost cultic journey of good intentions. This book also illustrates the all-to-typical white middle- and upper-class religious good intentions that do not take human evil seriously. It is also a story of someone “born into” a movement, cult or religious experience who must, sooner or later, make their own choices about values and faith. This book could be helpful to other “born intos” who need to discover themselves and true faith. |
