AMERICAN CATHOLIC : The Saints and Sinners Who Built America’s Most Powerful Church
Morris, Charles R.
Times Books, 1997
511 pages

This is a major work with some very helpful analysis about the history, difficulties and current struggles of American Catholicism. His analysis of the major social, economic and cultural changes that followed the post-World War II years is very helpful for discerning why marketplace faith issues began to crawl back into the psyche of congregants and some institutional gatekeepers of establishment American Catholicism (and mainline and evangelical Protestants). Andrew Greely said, “Morris has written the best one volume history of the last one hundred years of American Catholicism.”

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
