CALLED TO SERVE
Green, Michael
Hodder & Stoughton, 1964
95 pages

Taking the ministry and teaching of both Jesus and the early church as his cues, Green discusses the orders of ministers in Christ’s church. He devotes a chapter each to the origins of the offices of deacon, priest and bishop, carefully sorting essential biblical conceptions from nonessential components. Green defends clerical ordination, for example, as having biblical precedent, but not as an absolute requisite to priestly service. Green discusses the two main issues of ministry which stand as barriers to reunification of the church: apostolic succession and sacrificial priesthood.
