DOROTHY DAY : Portraits by Those Who Knew Her
review by Pete Hammond
Rosalie G. Riegle
Orbis Books, 2003
Hard Cover 192 pages

This is one more tribute to a Twentieth Century Roman Catholic leader who might become the first American saint. Day was the co-founder of the Catholic Worker effort in the mid-20th Century with philosopher Peter Maurin. She put justice for the poor on the church map amid all kinds of resistance, persecution and opposition. This is a collection of memories, impressions and relationships from that journey. It is emotional, insightful and full of appreciation for this visionary pioneer. Riegle has helped many beneficiaries of Day’s work and friendship find their voice.

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been give to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:19,20 (NIV)
