EQUIPPING THE SAINTS : A Method of Self-Directed Bible Study for Lay Groups
Dozier, Verna J.
Alban Institute, 1981
45 pages

Dozier declares, “The point of lay Bible study is to help lay people reclaim their authority as the people of God” (Celia Hahn in the preface). Hahn adds, “Laity are raised in a culture of dependence on authorities. We are taught to sit at the feet of experts, and not to trust the validity of our own wrestling.” Dozier wants to help laypeople discover their call through Scripture. She provides guidelines for personal or small group Bible study and presents a dramatic narrative of her group wrestling with Scripture and its application. This is very helpful for beginners in Bible study not led by an expert.

""You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.""

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
