FAITH AND WEALTH
González, Justo L.
Harper & Row, 1990
240 pages

This is a history of early Christian views on the origin, significance and use of money. González has exhaustively researched this vital marketplace topic largely ignored in Christian theology. He examines four centuries of Christian ideas about money, property, communal sharing, and the rights and obligations of the rich and poor. In the early church, wealth was invariably regarded as a theological issue. González asks why it is not so regarded today. Highly recommended. (For another patristic view of money, see “Money and Property” in A. Bieler’s The Social Humanism of Calvin.)

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
