FRANCIS SCOTT KEY : God’s Courageous Composer
Collins, David R.
Mott Media, 1982
114 pages

This profile of the author of America’s national anthem is one of a series written for children. It uses a first-person conversational style to help young readers enter into Key’s childhood in a Christian family, a career as a lawyer, his rejection of slave ownership and his life-long pattern of writing poetry. The story culminates during his detainment by the invading British navy and its attack on Fort McHenry where he wrote what has become known as the “Star Spangled Banner.” Included are all four stanzas, not just the first which is only what is traditionally sung. This is a good contribution to help children understand that faith is to be practiced in all walks of life.

""You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.""

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
