FRANCIS SCOTT KEY
: God’s Courageous Composer
This profile of the author of America’s national anthem is one of a series written for children. It uses a first-person conversational style to help young readers enter into Key’s childhood in a Christian family, a career as a lawyer, his rejection of slave ownership
and his life-long pattern of writing poetry. The story culminates during his detainment by the invading British navy and its attack on Fort McHenry where he wrote what has become known as the “Star Spangled Banner.” Included are all four stanzas, not just the first which is only what is traditionally sung. This is a good contribution to help children understand that faith is to be practiced in all walks of life. |
