HAROLD E. HUGHES- THE MAN FROM IDA GROVE : A Senator's Personal Story
review by Pete Hammond
Harold E. Hughes, with Dick Schneider
, 1979
Hard Cover 346 pages

Here is a straight forward auto-biography of a Minnesota farm boy, alcoholic, truck driver who became his state’s Governor and then its U.S. Senator. Hughes offers a painfully candid story of his alcoholic journey and how faith finally helped him engage and break this destructive addiction. This journey gave him understanding and compassion for the least among us and he sustained that concern when he arrived in the halls of power. The story is long, detailed, and can feel a bit tedious, but that can also be its power for those who seek to understand this addiction, or who are caught in their own and need to enter some one else’s personal story of pain, confusion, danger, loss and recovery.

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
