HOW I CHANGED MY MIND ABOUT THE CHURCH
Here is a classic work from an early pioneer in the American marketplace movement. Halverson tells of his own journey out of an institutional view of church and into a “people mobilized for ministry in daily life” view. He is very honest in confessing some traditional but nonbiblical perceptions he had of the roles of the pastor and congregation in his early days. He discusses two kinds of Christians: those “who are meeting-centered in their Christian experience, develop a kind of spiritual dyspepsia, a spiritual satiation and stagnancy” and “those who are always going [but] rarely have anything to offer when they get there. Their intentions are good but they lack spiritual resources to benefit those to whom they go under the duress of their incentive” (pp. 22-23). Halverson closes with a personal and practical
“Where Do You Begin” for his pastoral peers. |
