JOHN CALVIN
: The Man and His Ethics
Most attempts to understand Calvinism since its inception in the 1530s emphasize his doctrine at the expense of his moral ideas and have sidestepped the study of his life, says Harkness. This book was originally published to fill that vacuum. The author provides a short biography, reviews the major aspects of Calvinistic doctrine and considers the ethical obligations arising from the duty of glorifying God. Finally, Harkness deals with Calvin’s social ethics related to family, economics and the state. She also provides largely overlooked material from Calvin’s writings. Expensive reprints are available through AMS Press and Gordon Press. |
