Carter declares in the introduction, “This is a not a history of my administration but a highly personal report of my own experiences.... Any... defects in the book are my own, and may even be helpful to the reader in giving a more accurate picture of the kind of person I am” (p. xiv). Carter includes personal entries from his diary, discusses his own foibles, and shares family anecdotes and struggles. Carter also details much of his international work with leaders of communist nations and other world powers.
