LEISURE
: The Basis of Culture
At the time this book was written, work increasingly was being displaced by leisure. Many theologians opposed the “problem of leisure” via the divine requirement for work. Pieper maintains that leisure, not labor, is the basis of the Western cultural tradition. Leisure implies inner calm and celebration, according to Pieper. We need to reinstate divine worship at the center of leisure. More philosophical than theological, Leisure has influenced subsequent theologies of work, especially those seeking to resist and critique cocreationism. |
