LEISURE : The Basis of Culture
Pieper, Josef
Faber & Faber, London, 1952

At the time this book was written, work increasingly was being displaced by leisure. Many theologians opposed the “problem of leisure” via the divine requirement for work. Pieper maintains that leisure, not labor, is the basis of the Western cultural tradition. Leisure implies inner calm and celebration, according to Pieper. We need to reinstate divine worship at the center of leisure. More philosophical than theological, Leisure has influenced subsequent theologies of work, especially those seeking to resist and critique cocreationism.

"Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life." "
