LEST INNOCENT BLOOD BE SHED
Haille, Philip P.
Harper Colophon, 1979
303 pages

This is a beautifully crafted story of a village in southern France that gave itself sacrificially to help Jews flee Nazi and Vichy persecution during World War II. At one level it is the story of the local Protestant pastor Andre Tocmé and his wife’s leadership in the risky venture. At another level it is a report on one generation of Huguenot Christians living out their belief in Jesus Christ and his teachings. The book is rich in lessons about the church’s witness amid war, hostility, persecution and danger. Haille bares his own soul as a Jew, World War II veteran and professor of ethics. Very well written. (For more see David Clyde Jones.)

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth."

John 4:23,24 (NIV)
