MISSIONAL CHURCH
Six scholars from the Gospel and Our Culture Network build on the work of Bishop Lesslie Newbigin. Atrophy is the natural end of churches focused on programmatic and institutional maintenance, they say. Instead, we must recapture the church’s essential purpose as a “missional” agent to the world. Since the world is migrating to our cities and the unchurched are now our neighbors, we must update our concept of missions from “foreign” to “domestic.” Then all Christians become missionaries and the entire congregational budget is designated to missions, in whatever creative form it takes. This is a call to and study of “the missionary encounter of the gospel with North American . . . perspectives, preferences and practices.” |
