PRAYERS THAT AVAIL MUCH FOR THE WORKPLACE
review by Pete Hammond
Germaine Copeland
Harrison House, 2001
Paperback 292 pages

Here is a devotional work from a decidedly conservative evangelical non-workplace author. There are 87 prayers of two to four pages each with five to twenty scriptural verses for each one. There are five groups including “individual concerns”, “employers”, “employees”, “personal”, and “guidance and attitude.” This work has a very narrow perspective focusing on the executive individual. It also tends to affirm a prosperity view of the Christian faith by suggesting repeatedly that “God is a god of ‘abundance’ and he is for you enjoying it.” There is a hint of the “power of positive thinking” perspective throughout. Justice issues do not appear such as encouraging praying for someone who is to be fired, but with there is no hint of offering outplacement service or severance benefits. The publisher admits that Copeland had counsel from only one CEO friend. This work has limited benefit.
