SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL
Schumacher, E. F.
Harper & Row, 1973
324 pages

Schumacher examines small-scale economics, sometimes termed “Buddhist economics.” This, he posits, will enable government to function “as if people mattered.” Schumacher shows how making economics “small” can positively benefit everyone. He focuses on land use, nuclear energy, technology and even education as well as Third World development and problems. The last part of his book examines the concept of ownership, touching on socialism, the realignment of largescale organizations and how the current pattern of economics can be changed. This book is a wonderful starting place for discussions of questions centering on economic justice.
