THE PURITAN DILEMMA : The Story of John Winthrop
Morgan, Edmund S.
Scott Foresman, 1962
224 pages

Puritanism faced a problem that affects society today. Morgan asks, “What responsibility does a righteous man owe his society? If society follows a course he considers morally wrong, should he withdraw and keep his principles intact, or should he stay?” Morgan points out that the Puritans were the rebels in English society. They withdrew and established a new society. But ironically, various Puritan visionaries threatened to upset the new society. America faces the dilemma of preserving individual freedom while maintaining social order. Good college text.
