This collection of papers by thirty-nine authors was prepared in conjunction with the World Future Society’s 1983 conference titled “Working Now and in the Future.” It offers “insights into the problems associated with work and careers, employment and unemployment in a world that is being rapidly transformed by accelerating technological innovations” (preface). From a wide variety of academic disciplines and value orientations, the authors examine changes that emerged by 1983. They also discuss topics such as economic structural change, management, computers, work trends, education and lifestyle. The collection offers an objective description and scientific analysis of the various tensions inherent in the working.
