TREASURE IN CLAY JARS : Partners in Missional Faithfulness
review by Pete Hammond
Lois Barrett, Editor
Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2003
Hard Cover 174 pages

This is another rich work from the Gospel and Our Culture Network (GOCN). In this one, seven Christian scholars continue their previous analytical work from the Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America (Eerdmans, 1998) by studying eight churches and one cluster of congregations. The range covers Pentecostal to Roman Catholic, suburban Anglo to urban Africa-American, and New Jersey to Ontario, Canada to California. The team of researcherscomments that these churches, “...see themselves not so much as sending, as being sent. A missional congregation lets God’s mission permeate everything that the congregation does....” (Pg. x) Eight “patterns” are identified and each is connected to New Testament passages. Then these are illustrated in the congregations that were visited and portrayed. This is substantive theological/biblical work with tangible evidence in real congregational life. This work is refreshing because it blends the too often separation of analyst/scholars with parish realities.
