UNSHAKABLE FAITH
: Booker T. Washington & George Washington Carver
Here are biographical profiles of two Christian African American men who suffered from slavery’s manifold abuses and were inextricably bound together in the launching of Tuskegee Institute in the late 1800s. Washington, founder of Tuskegee, recruited Carver to join him in its early days. Launching an educational institution for poor blacks in rural Alabama that challenged them daily, they broke racial and economic stereotypes, served a disenfranchised people, raised money from Northerners, grew the food needed by the school and tested each other’s attitudes. Perry writes with compassion without hiding the rough edges of each man’s personality and genius. |
