WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR? ECONOMICS AS IF VALUES MATTER
This excellent book—in a magazine format—is a thorough examination of a wide variety of economic issues relating to faith. Sojourners is known for its justice issues positions, thus the study guide heavily emphasizes such subjects as changing personal attitudes toward money and possessions; applying biblical principles about money to everyday life; giving that visions legs and arms; and transforming politics, the community and the church through this new vision. Chapter articles are written by different people, which makes the book interesting and varied. Of special interest is the chapter “Reimaging Consumer Economics,” an in-depth examination of American consumerism. The article called “A Consuming Wilderness: Attracted and Repelled by the Mall of America” is a revelation. Any one of these articles could
consume a Sunday school class or small group for at least half a year, so don’t expect to whip through it in an afternoon. This study guide is one to live by—or at least to be challenged by. |
