This is a well-crafted analysis of the terrible realities of ethnic cleansing, mass murder and religious wars of today. Catherwood helps the newcomer to this very confusing, even frightening, reality with personal illustrations of his difficult experiences in modern Bosnia, Britain and America. He avoids oversimplifying nationalism, religion and ethnicity, including thoughtful treatments of each as well as the complex interplay between them. His scholarship sometimes demands careful reading. The bibliography is very extensive.
