WORK, PLAY, AND WORSHIP IN A LEISURE-ORIENTED SOCIETY
review by Pete Hammond
Gordon Dahl
Augsburg, 1972
Paperback 125 pages

This is a plea for a more balanced life amid the increased pace of American life. Dahl is noted for declaring, “Our problem today is that we worship our work, work at our play, and play at our worship” and then builds his work around this trio of basic elements of life that are now fraught with problems. He includes an analysis of the less-than-biblical views of these three, with a helpful study of the views of work through modern history. This is one of the early entries into the modern field of leisure studies. Thankfully, this work is about much more than personal pleasure and recuperation. Dahl addresses the justice and prophetic dimensions of the Christian faith too.
