Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

sara: (01/21/00) Dear Jack, I just recently graduated from college with a major in secondary education. Seeking a teaching position appears to be the sensible thing to do, but not what I feel God is pulling my heart to do... I have felt a calling to missions for several years now but have struggled with finding "my place." By that I mean my knowledge of missions organizations and opportunites is very limited. I have traveled on two short term trips to Bolivia, South America---and thoroughly felt connected with the Bolivian people. But I am open to exploring possibilities other places as well. I feel called to work as part of a sort of "team" or in some manner an assistant to a ministry or missionary. I enjoy people of all ages and am very community-oriented. Having been a two sport college athlete, I also have some interest in being active or using athletics in serving the Lord---as well as the possibility of using my teaching degree in some manner.I just stumbled across this site today and do appreciate this chance to ask you for direction and advice you may be able to give me. This is a somewhat scary time of my life--because of big decisions--but I am very thankful for the options God has allowed me to have--- Continually I need to seek His perspective and trust His plans are perfect. Thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Jack: Hi, Sara,

Thanks so much for sharing something of your struggle to "find my place." There are many like you! And it is a blessing to know that the Lord knows you and has a place for you in His plan. Your teaching degree, athletic ability, and your short term experiences are valuable resources to guide you.

If you particularly feel called to teach, I think there are two directions you could go in terms of cross-cultural ministry: teaching in a mission school (which would probably involve you in learning a foreign language) or teaching missionaries' children. For either of these options, I think it would be helpful to have had a couple of years experience in your own language and culture, which gives you time to explore overseas options, and perhaps get some Bible training as well. I would also recommend involvement in Christian service in your church or a para-church organization to expand your gifts and sharpen ministry skills.

Should you choose to attend the Urbana Missionary Convention, you will have the opportunity to discover many agencies who have mission schools or schools for missionaries' children. You will be able to explore with them your need for working as a member of a team and finding a community. You will also expand your knowledge of what God is doing in the world. It's a great opportunity.

Blessings on you, Sara, as you seek the next step. Don't forget that He is more interested in your finding His will than you are.

Jack
