Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

Kelvin: (10/26/00) I'm hispanic, double majoring in psychology and spanish but I want to go to the mission field averseas. here is my Q? What can I do with a psych degree if Im a missionary?

Jack: Thanks, Kelvin, for your question.
Depending on what prompted you to select this major, I can think of many places where you would be a very valuable asset to any mission context. Let me list a few:

  1. Your training would be very helpful in understanding people and orienting you in communicating the Gospel in a way that would be most meaningful to your hearers.
  2. If you move into counseling, you will find an enormous field of believers - in almost any place, but certainly in Latin America - where they have come into the joy of the Gospel, but have a lot of need to work through the implications of their faith in terms of the healing of life's hurts, forgiveness, and understanding the practical dimensions of God's love for them.
  3. If you are interested in teaching, most missions contexts need communicators who can help people to learn through discovery rather than being just told. Your preparation will give you many insights in this area.
  4. Your agency may tap you to help in screening new candidates or guiding them through their adjustment processes.

The list could go on. I am reminded of a statement made by a missionary statement of a former generation. He felt that two of the most crying needs in Latin America were for Christian newspaper reporters and Christian psychologists Well ... here you are!

Blessings on you, amigo.
